I have over 20 years of experience and an ability to see the core ideas and goals of the book and make suggestions that preserve the author's voice and vision. No matter how unstructured or chaotic a book is, I can see what the writer is trying to shape and provide the details and guidance for...
CRITIQUE: $2 per page
I'll read through the manuscript and suggest where to trim and clarify the work until only your bright, genuine, unique voice remains and offer thoughtful, considerate, but thorough interpretations and suggestions. You will receive a written evaluation of the manuscript's strengths and weaknesses, as well as a detailed critique about characters, plot, voice, pacing, structure and quality of writing, pointing out where the writing went smoothly and was effective, and making suggestions on ways to improve the parts that need rewriting.
LINE/DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING: $4 per page
Line by line editing is done in Word through Track Changes, and you'll receive that version of the ms electronically, as well as a second document where changes have been accepted so you can read a clean copy. Summary of larger editing issues related to plot, dialogue, structure, character, voice, etc. included.
PROOFREADING: $3 per page
Correction of punctuation, grammar, spelling, syntax issues, consistency, formatting. This step is best left until the manuscript is the best it can be, per the above services. Proofreading and editing are separate steps that require two different ways of reading the manuscript, so editing is not included.
My services include a discussion of the manuscript by phone or email, any follow up emails, and a no-cost reading of up to 25 revised pages.
Short pieces (short stories, essays, a group of poems)...
