I wrote this book in 2009 as volume six in the College Music Society's Sourcebooks in American Music series. Edited by Michael Budds of the University of Missouri, the book is a reworking of my doctoral dissertation at the University of Colorado. It presents analysis and commentary on a landmark work of the American repertory. I argue that the Third Symphony is a pivotal work in Ives's creative output, and discuss the work's critical reception as a means of understanding changing attitudes towards modernism in American music in the postwar era.
