While the latest versions remain under wraps, eight variations of possible logos for Florida Gulf Coast University were released by school officials Wednesday. The artwork generally incorporates the school's mascot eagle with the school's name or initials and the school colors of cobalt blue and emerald green. The logos will provide a visual identity for the school, which is scheduled to open in August 1997, on T-shirts and other paraphernalia. The release of the logo designs has been the center of a controversy since May 19 when representatives from Tampa-based King/Matson Advertising, Inc., which is designing the logo, abruptly canceled a planned presentation because the Naples Daily News would not agree to restrictions that would have prevented the designs from being photographed.
