Lee County planners may have used the wrong formula to determine Florida Gulf Coast University's impacts on roadways and services over the next 10 years.
State law requires all 10 of Florida's universities to make an agreement with their respective local governments regarding how much it will cost to offset the school's impact on the area's water facilities, sewer systems, parks and recreational facilities and roadways.
Consultants hired by the Board of Regents used data specific to Florida campuses to determine that the school's share of those impacts add up to $405,000. However, county officials figure it will take $9.1 million for FGCU to compensate for the added stress on area roadways and other services.
