What's remarkable about a seemingly unremarkable year in the life of Tommy Velasquez is its normalcy.
A year has passed since the 15-year-old Bonita Springs resident returned home after a nightmarish three-month stay in Honduras, courtesy of an untested immigration law and the indifference of overworked immigration officials.
Tommy's life was turned upside down on Oct. 3, 1995 when his mother, Luz Degollado, decided to take the boy to Honduras for a two week trip she thought would fulfill immigration requirements for his legal American residency. Both
mother and son were born in the poverty-ridden Central American country and moved to the United States when Tommy was four. Although Luz and her husband Santos were granted legal residency status in the 1980's, Tommy was not. Degolllado admitted privately that at the time she and her husband sought legal residency, they were afraid to include the boy in the process.
